Verdon Gorge

Where turquoise waters flow through stunning cliffs.
Place overview
The Verdon Gorge is a river canyon located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France.
It was formed by the Verdon River, which is named for its turquoise color, one of the location's most notable characteristic. The canyon is about 25 km (15.5 mi) long and up to 700 meters (0.4 mi) deep.
The limestone deposits give color to the gorge's rock formations. The Verdon River has carved the gorge through erosion over millions of years, exposing the distinct colors of the limestone and creating a dramatic, mediterranean rocky landscape.
Being in close proximity of the French Riviera, the Verdon Gorge is a very popular touristic place. Tourists can enjoy scenic viewpoints overlooking the river and cliffs, go kayaking or hiking along the river, and limestone walls also attract rock climbers, with 1,500 climbing routes available ranging from 20 meters (65 feet) to over 400 meters (1,300 feet).
