Valley of Souls

Place overview
The Valley of Souls is a municipal protected area, departmental natural monument, and geological formation of the city of La Paz. It is located just a few kilometers from the urban area at an altitude of 3,965 meters above sea level.
The valley's name has two possible explanations. The first is provided by local residents, who claim that the wind produces mournful sounds as it passes between the formations. The second is that the elongated shapes of the formations resemble the silhouettes of spirits.
Specialists state that these formations, which are near the Palca Canyon crossed by a variable-flow river, are the result of glacier melting at the end of the planet's tertiary period. The place has the appearance of a field of stalagmites. It bears similarities to another area in La Paz known as the Valley of the Moon.
