Preikestolen

Hike up to the 604-meter tall Pulpit Rock and experience a unique scenic viewpoint overlooking the nearby fjord.
Place overview
Preikestolenis a steep cliff which rises 604 metres (1,982 ft) above Lysefjorden, in Rogaland county, Norway. The top of the cliff consists of an almost flat platform in which hikers can admire the landscape.
It's name in english means "The Pulpit Rock", "Pulpit", or "Preacher's Chair".
Tourism at the site has been increasing in the early 21st century, with 300,000 visitors in 2024, making it one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. BASE jumpers often leap from the cliff. Due to its increased popularity, the most used path to the site (a 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) long hike) was improved by Nepalese Sherpas in 2013.
To complete the journey to the top, you follow a path through mountain trails and glacier lakes. Starting from the area at the base (where the tourist buses park), the trip takes about 4 hours. This includes roughly two hours of ascent, half an hour at the top, and an hour and a half of descent. However, the time taken can vary depending on the visitor's experience as well as weather conditions.
In any case, there are very steep sections, and this route should not be considered just a more or less strenuous walk: it is not. It is at a higher level of difficulty. However, families with small children or elderly people manage to complete the hike every day. Preikestolen receives about 80,000 visitors each year, the majority during the summer months.
