La Guitare Beach
A hidden Mediterranean cove whose rock opening is shaped like a guitar.
Place overview
La Guitare is a small cove on the Mediterranean coast of the province of Aïn Témouchent, in north-western Algeria. It lies in the municipality of El Messaid, about 30 km north of the city of Aïn Témouchent, right next to Sbiaat beach (formerly known as Plage de Géraldie).
Enclosed by cliffs, the cove is usually reached by boat from Sbiaat. Its name comes from the rock cavity that opens onto the sea: carved over centuries by waves, currents and wind, from certain angles its outline resembles a guitar. Light filtering through the opening changes the colour of the water throughout the day.
Its fine sand, clear turquoise water and secluded setting have turned it into one of the most photographed spots on the Algerian west coast in recent years, largely thanks to social media. In the summer of 2025 visitors reported a rockfall at the entrance of the cove, so it is worth checking access conditions before going.
